‘Hero’ security guard and shoppers among 10 victims of US supermarket shooting named by police

A security guard, the mother of a former fire commissioner, and a grandmother who helped feed the needy were among those killed in a “racially motivated” shooting at a US supermarket in the city of Buffalo.

Buffalo Police have released all the names of the 10 victims killed in the shooting and three others who were wounded during the attack on Saturday. They are:

Pearly Young
The 77-year-old ran a food pantry in the Central Park neighbourhood of Buffalo for 25 years, according to a tweet from a reporter. She was also a grandmother and missionary who loved “singing, dancing” and being with family, according to the reporter.

Ruth Whitfield
Ms Whitfield, 86, was the mother of former Buffalo fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield. She had visited her husband in a nursing home and was on her way home when she stopped at Tops supermarket where the attack happened, TV station WGRZ reported.

Andre Mackneil
The 53-year-old lived in Auburn, New York, about 120 miles east of Buffalo.

Aaron Salter
The 55-year-old was a former Buffalo police officer who worked as a security guard at Tops after retiring, according to TV station WKBW. Mr Salter fired at the shooter, who was wearing body armour and was not harmed by the shot, according to WKBW.

Geraldine Talley
Ms Talley was 62 and lived in Buffalo.

Katherine “Kat” Massey
The 72-year-old was an advocate for the Black community in Buffalo, according to the Buffalo News, to which she frequently wrote letters, including one last year arguing for more federal action and legislation to address gun violence. She was a member of “We Are Women Warriors,” according to the Buffalo News.

Roberta A Drury
Ms Drury, 32, moved to Buffalo from the Syracuse, New York, area to be with her older brother after he had a bone marrow transplant, her sister, Amanda Drury, said by Facebook Messenger. Roberta helped him with his bar, The Dalmatia, and with his family, her sister said, adding that “she was vibrant and outgoing, could talk to anyone”.

Margus D Morrison
The 52-year-old was from Buffalo.

Heyward Patterson
The 67-year-old was known as “Jitney” because he drove people to and from the Tops store and helped them with their groceries, according to the Buffalo News. He was also a church deacon.

Celestine Chaney
Ms Chaney, 65, went to Tops to buy strawberries to make cakes, her son, Wayne Jones, told the New York Times. She was visiting her sister, Mr Jones said.

The three wounded in the shooting have been named as Zaire Goodman, 20, Jennifer Warrington, 50, and Christopher Braden, 55.
