Boy, 2, finds gun in sofa and accidentally kills himself

A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a gun in the sofa at the family’s home in Michigan.

The boyfriend of the toddler’s mother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Markus Nevills Jr, 22, objected to being charged at his first court appearance.

Nevills told police he had “zoned out” while high on cannabis and was scrolling on his phone when the shooting happened, according to a court filing.

“I don’t understand this. I’m trying to see how they’re saying this is my fault. I didn’t shoot and kill him,” Nevills said in court.

Kiaire McCoy apparently found the gun at the home in Kentwood and shot himself on Friday.

“It sounds like a terrible accident, and there is no criminal intent there,” defence lawyer Richard Zambon said.

Stricter guns laws are due to come into place in Michigan in 2024.

Gun owners will be required to keep guns in a locked storage box if children are present and anyone wanting to buy a gun will have to undergo a background check.
